What Is Makaton?

April 28, 2026

Makaton is a unique communication program that combines speech, signs, and symbols to help people express themselves and understand others more easily. Originally developed in the 1970s, Makaton is widely used by individuals with communication difficulties, including those with developmental disabilities, speech delays, or learning differences. However, it can benefit anyone who needs extra support with communication.

Unlike formal sign languages, Makaton is designed to support spoken language, not replace it. Users typically speak while signing key words, making it easier to follow conversations and reinforce understanding. Alongside signs, simple visual symbols are often used to represent words or ideas, helping individuals process information in multiple ways.

Makaton is especially valuable in inclusive environments such as schools, healthcare settings, and community programs. It promotes independence, confidence, and social interaction, allowing individuals to communicate their needs, feelings, and choices more effectively. It also encourages patience and understanding among caregivers, educators, and peers.

In everyday life, Makaton can be used during routines like meals, playtime, or appointments, creating more meaningful connections. By bridging communication gaps, Makaton helps build a more inclusive world—one where everyone has a voice and the opportunity to be understood.
