Every year, millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities rely on the steady, patient work of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to live full, independent, and dignified lives. Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, observed each September, is a chance to pause and give this workforce the acknowledgment it has earned all year long.
DSPs help with the tasks that make daily life possible — getting ready in the morning, preparing meals, managing medications, getting to work or school, and building the routines that create stability. But the job is about more than tasks. DSPs are often confidants, advocates, and steady presences in the lives of the people they support. They celebrate birthdays, sit through doctor’s appointments, help someone learn to use public transportation for the first time, and show up again the next day to do it all over again.
This work asks for patience, creativity, and genuine care, often for modest pay and without much public recognition. Turnover in the field remains high nationwide, not because the work lacks meaning, but because the compensation and support structures haven’t always matched the importance of what DSPs do. Recognition Week is, in part, a reminder of that gap — and a call to close it.
But recognition isn’t just about acknowledging a problem. It’s about celebrating the people who show up anyway. It’s about the DSP who remembers exactly how someone likes their coffee, who notices a change in mood before anyone else does, who treats every person they support with the same respect they’d want for their own family.
