Different Types of Wheelchairs

July 22, 2025

“When it comes to mobility solutions, wheelchairs are a crucial tool that enables individuals with mobility challenges to maintain their independence and participate fully in various aspects of life.” [1]

“The wheelchair industry has expanded tremendously, with various designs and functionalities introduced in different wheelchairs to satisfy clients’ varying needs. Choosing a wheelchair might seem overwhelming if you are unsure which one best suits your needs. To make selecting a wheelchair smoother, we have compiled a comprehensive overview of different types of wheelchairs.” [2]

Let’s explore each type of wheelchair in detail to facilitate your decision-making process.

Manual Wheelchairs: Features and Selection

“Manual wheelchairs, one of the most common types of wheelchairs, offer independence and ease of use. This section delves into the different kinds of manual wheelchairs, their benefits, limitations, and guides you in choosing the right one.

Standard manual wheelchairs are lightweight, foldable, and ideal for daily use.  Transport wheelchairs are compact and perfect for short trips, and sport wheelchairs, built for those who engage in sports, offering enhanced maneuverability and stability.

When choosing a manual wheelchair, consider your mobility level, lifestyle, and specific needs. Consulting with a healthcare professional or mobility specialist can help you make an informed decision about the types of wheelchairs that suit you best.”

Powered Wheelchairs

“Power wheelchairs are electric, battery-operated wheelchairs that propel the user forward by use of controls. A motorized wheelchair like this resolves the issue of fatigue as well as disabilities that restrict the use of manually operated wheelchairs. Users of powered chairs can go further without tiring and gain more independence when operating a manual chair is difficult or impossible.

Some of the downsides to powered wheelchairs is that they are heavier and bulkier than manual chairs. This comes with the territory since powered chairs need to include a battery and motor at a minimum for mobility. There are many types of powered wheelchairs. The most basic power chairs offer the user the ability to drive around and they are typically operated with hand steering and controls. However, powered wheelchairs are just one of Different Types of Wheelchairs available.” [4]

Pediatric Wheelchairs

“Pediatric wheelchairs are specifically designed for kids. They most often resemble a small version of an adult wheelchair. Pediatric wheelchairs can be fitted with positioning devices and components similar to those found on adult wheelchairs. Most will have adjustments such as backrest height, seat width, and armrest and legrest height that allow for growth.

It is important that children quickly and easily adjust to using a wheelchair and feel comfortable interacting with peers from a wheelchair.  A cool looking chair decked out the way the child likes, goes a long way in building the child’s self-esteem and confidence. Most manufacturers of pediatric wheelchairs now offer a line of fun looking wheelchairs and accessories.”

Positioning Wheelchairs

“Positioning wheelchairs offer the user the ability to maneuver into different positions on their wheelchair. Typically, these chairs are electric and battery-powered for both mobility as well as positioning. There is a variety of positioning wheelchair types and styles.” [4]

Sport Wheelchairs

“Sports wheelchairs cater to athletes engaging in activities like basketball, tennis, or racing. These specialized wheelchairs feature lightweight frames and specialized wheels for enhanced stability and maneuverability.

Each sports wheelchair incorporates unique features tailored to the sport, such as reinforced bumpers or customized seating. Designed to handle competitive play, these wheelchairs enable athletes with limited mobility to enjoy various sports while maximizing their potential.” [6]

All-Terrain Wheelchairs

“These chairs are robustly designed to safely accommodate uneven surfaces, and snow, gravel, sand, and other types of terrain without getting stuck. All-terrain wheelchairs are a great choice for outdoor recreational enthusiasts and those who want or require outdoor mobility for shopping, errands, and other excursions.” [7]

Portable/Transport Wheelchairs

“Portable/Transport wheelchairs are designed for individuals who require occasional wheelchair use or need portable and lightweight wheelchairs and have a caregiver to assist with pushing. This manual wheelchair can be folded and stored in a compact form, making it easy to transport in a car or on public transportation.

Transport wheelchairs are excellent for travel or for situations where storage space is limited. They provide the convenience of being able to fold and unfold the wheelchair quickly, allowing users to adapt to different environments.

Transport wheelchairs have removable footrests and backrests that fold down to further reduce the overall size when folded. Some models come with detachable wheels, making it even easier to fit the folded wheelchair into the trunk of a car or store it in a tight space.

These wheelchairs are popular among individuals who need a wheelchair for occasional outings or when traveling.” [1]

Reclining Wheelchairs or Tilt Wheelchairs

“Reclining wheelchairs and tilt wheelchairs provide pressure redistribution for resident-specific support or relief for a range of conditions. These chairs are often part of an individualized care plan based on clinical assessments.” [8]

Bariatric Wheelchairs

“Available in a wide range of configurations, including high back, reclining, tilt-in-space, manual, and power, bariatric wheelchairs are those constructed in heavy-duty designs to safely accommodate larger or heavier occupants. They offer wider, deeper seats and armrests for easy-fitting comfort.” [7]
